So they eventually got through the draw in Monaco and Liverpool were placed in Group E, along with:
Spartak Moscow– Russian Champions. We’ll be heading there around Halloween where the weather will not be pleasant. A fairly long flight too but it’s not like Sadio will be crammed in economy next to a fat bloke who’s belly is hanging over the armrest! We’ve met them in the competition before. 02/03 saw us beat them home and away. Spartak do however hold a couple of victories over us from the 1992 Cup Winners’ Cup. Will be a good test, but one Liverpool will be up to.
Sevilla– A very good side who handed us a reality check in 2015’s Europa League Final. I’d like to think we’re a much improved side since then but those defensive frailties are still there. We very much owe them one, but it will not be easy. The toughest team in the group by far and our only meeting was a defeat. The Reds will be looking to avenge that 3-1 loss in Basel.
Maribor– The Slovenian Champions are something of an enigma and while they will be odds on to be the whipping boys of Group E, nothing should be taken for granted. You would fully expect home and away victories. Anything less would be disappointing against a team we have never come across before.
Well how about that? For once, the Reds were plucked away from being dropped into a group of death and were placed snugly into a favourable group. There can’t be many of us who aren’t delighted with that draw. Even with it’s potential banana skins, this is a fantastic result and we should getting to the knockout phase. Klopp must be necking Lady Luck!
So dust off those passports, roll out the flags and get ready for Liverpool in the Champions League again.
