Will Liverpool still get Van Dijk?

After apologising to Southampton about “tapping up” Virgil Van Dijk, Liverpool could still sign him if he puts in a transfer request.

After a few crazy days with speculation that Virgil Van Dijk was a done deal and looked set to join Liverpool, Southampton stated that we approached the player illegally. Furthermore, Liverpool apologised to Southampton and ended interest on Virgil Van Dijk.

However, I do think if Virgil Van Dijk does hand in a transfer request then anything can happen. We already know that Van Dijk has his heart set on Liverpool and has already turned down the likes of Chelsea and Man City in favour of joining us and working under Jurgen Klopp. Personally, I can still see him signing for Liverpool.

This sort of transfer saga happened with PSG and AC Milan over Thaigo Silva a few years ago.

“PSG have taken the decision to withdraw from current discussion with AC Milan concerning the player Thiago Silva.”

“PSG sign Thiago Silva”

This is why I personally think that Virgil Van Dijk will still sign for Liverpool in the summer transfer window because Southampton won’t keep a £60m player in the club if he is unhappy. So for Liverpool to sign Virgil Van Dijk he must put in a transfer request for us to have any hope of signing him.

However, with reports stating that Southampton will only consider offers in excess of £70m its a difficult one. Virgl Van Dijk would 100% improve our first team but at £70m there are a lot of different options out their for a much cheaper price. It still remains to see if Liverpool will go back in for Virgl Van Dijk but Liverpool have a whole hosts of targets including Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli.
